Pond algae control

Some algae is normal in a healthy pond. Problems start when excess nutrients and strong sunlight let it take over. The type of algae tells you how to treat it.

Green water vs string algae

  • Green water: free-floating single-cell algae that turn water pea-soup green. The most effective fix is a UVC clarifier.
  • String algae (blanketweed): long strands clinging to rocks, liner and waterfalls. Remove by hand and treat the cause.

Tackle the cause

  • Reduce nutrients: avoid overfeeding fish and remove sludge with a pond vacuum.
  • Add shade: aim to cover part of the surface with plants. See pond planters.
  • Boost biology: beneficial bacteria compete with algae for nutrients.

Treatments we stock

PondMAX Algae Block, PondMAX BactiMAX+, PondMAX BioNatural 3 in 1 and BBA Aquatic Rejuvenator, along with OASE pond treatments.

Treat safely

Measure your pond volume and follow the label dose. Run aeration during treatment, as decaying algae uses oxygen. Test your water to find the nutrient source.
