Pond Spillway Box

Pond spillways and waterfall weirs

A spillway creates a smooth, even sheet of water at the top of a waterfall. Without one, water tends to trickle unevenly between rocks or escape behind them.

How a spillway works

The pump feeds water into the back of the spillway box. It fills, then flows out across a flat lip, giving a consistent curtain of water. Most spillways are designed to be disguised with rocks and plants for a natural look.

Matching the spillway to your pump

Wider spillways need more flow to form an even sheet. Check the manufacturer's recommended flow for the spillway width, then choose a filter & waterfall pump that delivers that flow at your waterfall height.

Installation tips

  • Install the lip perfectly level side to side.
  • Seal gaps between rocks with waterfall foam.
  • Combine with a flow-through filter at the top of the waterfall if you need extra filtration.

PondMAX preformed waterfalls offer another way to create a cascade.
