Beneficial Bacteria

Beneficial bacteria for healthier water

Beneficial bacteria are naturally occurring microbes that break down organic waste. In ponds, aquariums, tanks and wastewater systems, they convert ammonia, sludge and other waste into less harmful compounds, improving water quality and reducing odour.

How beneficial bacteria work

  • Nitrifying bacteria convert toxic ammonia from fish waste into nitrite, then into less harmful nitrate.
  • Heterotrophic bacteria digest organic sludge, leaves and uneaten food.

Adding concentrated bacteria helps a new or disturbed system establish these colonies faster.

Liquid or slow-release?

Liquid products act quickly and suit new systems or recovery after cleaning. Slow-release pellets, such as BBA Aquatic Rejuvenator pellets, keep working over time in larger water bodies.

Getting the best results

Bacteria need oxygen and work faster in warm water. Run aeration, dose by volume as the label directs, and avoid adding bacteria right after a chemical treatment unless the label says it's compatible. Brands include BBA Biosolution and PondMAX BactiMAX+.
