UVC Clarifiers

UVC clarifiers for green pond water

Green, pea-soup water is caused by single-cell algae floating in the water column. A UVC clarifier passes pond water past an ultraviolet lamp, which causes these algae to clump together so your filter can remove them. Most ponds start to clear within one to two weeks.

What a UVC can and can't do

A UVC clarifier treats free-floating algae (green water). It does not remove string algae or blanketweed growing on rocks and liner. For that, see algae control.

Choosing the right wattage

  • Check the manufacturer's maximum pond volume for each model, using the fish pond rating if you keep fish.
  • Flow matters too. Water passing too quickly gets too little UV exposure.
  • Fit the UVC after the mechanical filter so debris doesn't coat the quartz sleeve.

Ranges we stock

OASE Vitronic clarifiers (18W for ponds up to 20,000 L, 36W for around 40,000 L) and OASE Bitron Eco units, plus PondMAX PF UV pressure filters with built-in UV-C.

Maintenance

UV lamps lose strength over time, even when they still glow. Replace the lamp each season and clean the quartz sleeve when you service the filter. Replacement lamps are in pond spare parts.
