Why your pond needs aeration

Fish, plants and filter bacteria all depend on dissolved oxygen. Warm water holds less oxygen than cool water, and oxygen levels fall overnight when plants stop photosynthesising. On hot Australian summer nights, oxygen can drop fast.

Signs of low oxygen

• Fish gasping at the surface, especially early in the morning.
• Fish gathering near the waterfall or fountain.
• Bad odours or slow breakdown of sludge.

Aeration options

• Air pumps: push air through diffusers on the pond floor to oxygenate the full depth.
• Aeration kits: pump, airline and diffusers ready to install.
• Air stones & hose: replacement diffusers, airline and check valves.

Air pump or fountain?

Fountains and waterfalls mostly oxygenate the surface. An air pump with diffusers on the bottom lifts low-oxygen water from the depths and circulates the whole pond. Many fish ponds benefit from both.
