Pond water test kits
Fish can look fine while water quality is quietly going wrong. Testing shows you problems early, before they show up as sick fish or algae.
What to test
- Ammonia: from fish waste. Should be zero in an established pond.
- Nitrite: produced as bacteria break down ammonia. Should also be zero.
- Nitrate: the end product. Low levels are normal, high levels feed algae.
- pH: most pond fish do best in a stable range around neutral.
- Phosphate: a key nutrient for algae.
Liquid kits or test strips?
- Liquid test kits: more precise and cost-effective per test. The API Pond Master Test Kit covers pH, ammonia, nitrite and phosphate.
- Test strips: quick and convenient for routine checks, such as API Pond Care 5-in-1 strips.
How often to test
Test weekly in a new pond or after adding fish, then monthly once the pond is established. Test any time fish behave unusually.
Acting on results
See water treatments & conditioners to adjust pH, and beneficial bacteria to bring ammonia and nitrite down.
