Build your pond from the ground up
Every pond starts with its waterproof layer. You can either line a hand-dug hole with a flexible liner or drop in a rigid preformed pond. Both work well, and the right choice depends on the size and shape you want.
Liner or preformed pond?
- EPDM & PVC pond liners: any shape or size, from small garden ponds to large koi ponds. Best for natural, irregular designs.
- Preformed ponds: a ready-made shell that's quick to install. Best for small ponds and courtyard features.
Get the measurements right
For a flexible liner, add twice the maximum depth to both the length and width, plus an overlap around the edge. Our pond liner calculator does the maths for you.
Protect your liner
Remove sharp stones and roots, then lay underlay or a sand bed before fitting the liner. This is the easiest way to prevent punctures. If a leak does happen, a pond liner repair kit can usually fix it without replacing the liner.
